At its meeting in September 2023, the Foundation's board decided to donate 5.5 million kroner to the Marine and Technical Engineering Programme in Sønderborg so that they can move into new facilities at EUC.

In 2022, the Fredericia School of Marine and Technical Engineering opened a branch in Sønderborg. In 2022, five students started, and by 2023, that number has already grown to twelve new students on the programme and five on the admission course. Several of these students come directly from EUC Sønderborg.

The School of Marine and Technical Engineering has prepared a 5-year plan for the department in Sønderborg, where they expect 100 students at the school by 2027. By then, around 25 marine engineers will be trained annually in Sønderborg.

Marine engineers are key to development

The Marine and Technical Engineering Programme is essential for the green transition, as well-trained marine engineers are needed to ensure the operation and maintenance of Power-to-X plants, biogas plants, wind farms and district heating plants, etc. In other words, an attractive school of marine and technical engineering ensures talented and well-educated employees for the green transition in Sønderborg, as well as for the industrial companies in the area.

Originally, the plan was to integrate the Marine and Technical Engineering Programme at Alsion, where they would share facilities with SDU. However, after running the programme at Alsion for a year, it proved to be a better solution to set up the programme in separate buildings adjacent to EUC, where most of the students currently come from.

Therefore, an existing building at EUC is planned to be converted into classrooms and workshops for the School of Marine and Technical Engineering. The conversion amounts to 15 million kroner, of which other parties have agreed to provide a total of 9.5 million kroner in funding.

The board of Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation has decided to donate the remaining 5.5 million kroner to support an expansion of relevant educational programmes in Sønderborg – for the benefit of Danfoss and the green transition, etc.
